The Husky

the husky or Siberian husky

Husky Overview

Origin: The Husky or Siberian Husky was developed by the Chukchi people of northeastern Asia. Bred for pulling sleds over long distances in harsh Arctic conditions, they are resilient and energetic.

Size: 35–60 pounds; 20–24 inches tall.

Lifespan: 12–15 years.

Temperament: Huskies are outgoing, independent, and mischievous. While affectionate, they’re less clingy than other breeds and enjoy interacting with both humans and other dogs.

Care Needs

  • Diet: Needs a high-protein diet suited for active dogs. Feed twice daily to support their metabolism.

  • Exercise: This high-energy breed needs 1–2 hours of vigorous daily activity. Great activities include running, hiking, and agility training.

  • Grooming: Thick double coat requires brushing several times weekly. Heavy shedding occurs seasonally (“blowing coat”).

  • Health Concerns: Common concerns include hip dysplasia, eye disorders (like cataracts), and hypothyroidism. Regular vet visits are essential.

Fun Facts

  • Huskies are known for their “talking” vocalizations, often howling or “chatting” with their humans.

  • They have incredible endurance and participated in the famous 1925 serum run to Nome.
